2021 Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta – NOR and Online Entry Form

The Notice of Race (NOR) for next July’s Volvo Dun Laoghaire Regatta has just been published.

In order to facilitate social distancing and be Covid-19 compliant a new regatta format will comprise a One Design Championship (2nd – 4th July 2021) specifically tailored for sailors in the one-design keelboat and dinghy classes.

This to be followed by an Open Cruiser Championship (8th – 11th July 2021) catering for the full range of Cruiser Handicap classes.

Sailors have been quick to get on board with the new format with a number of classes already signed up.

Nine of the expected 22 racing classes have already declared regional or national championships to be held as part of the biennial sailing festival.

Online Entry has opened with Early Bird discounted entry available until 31 March 2021.

All fully paid entries received by 31 December 2020 will be automatically entered into our monthly draw to win a VDLR Hospitality Voucher to the value of €100, which may be spent on food and drink at your base club during VDLR 2021!

Clubhouse reopens for indoor dining from Friday December 4th!

We are delighted to be able to open the Clubhouse once again for indoor dining from Friday December 4th. Please see the schedule for opening below where we will be waiting to welcome you back to the Clubhouse. Demand for bookings has been high and reservations are a must. Due to the high demand we will operate the bar and JB room areas as an extension of the restaurant to ensure social distancing between tables and tables will seat a maximum of six diners.

As regards the snooker room, the government guidelines do not provide just yet for the reopening of this facility.

National Yacht Club’s Under 25’s/30’s Sections to host Q&A with Tom Dolan – Tuesday 1st December – 6pm

The National Yacht Club’s Under 25 and Under 30 sections are delighted to announce the second in a series of webinars to round out 2020. After the hugely successful match racing webinar, we now move offshore!   
 
The Nationals very own Tom Dolan (most famously known for his 5th place finish in the 2020 Solitaire du Figaro) will be joining us for an hour of questions so we can get to know more about him and life as a solo offshore sailor. 
 
This webinar will focus on gaining an insight into solo offshore life, Toms do’s and don’ts when offshore, as well as his thoughts on the future of short handed sailing in Ireland.

Match Racing Tips & Tricks

Next Wednesday the 25th November at 8pm there will be a “Match Racing Tips and Tricks” talk given by John Sheehy in conjunction with the National Yacht Club U30’s Section.

John is a highly experienced Match and Team Racer with many years of experience and several Irish Match Racing Championship wins.
The talk aims to cover interesting Match Racing situations, rules, video analysis and answer questions people may have, in order to give further information about Match Racing ahead of the series that will be run next season in the National Yacht Club.

The National – Chronicles of a Dun Laoghaire Yacht Club

This engaging work by long time Member Donal O’Sullivan describes how the National Yacht Club developed, from its beginnings as a rowing club, comfortably set down in the northeast corner of Dún Laoghaire Harbour, how it nearly went under on a couple of occasions, how it was threatened with forced migration to a less salubrious part of the Dún Laoghaire Harbour and how it grew into one of the finest yacht clubs in Dublin.

What is presented here is not only a narrative of the club’s evolution by way of specific events, but a celebration of some of the wonderful people who featured in the club’s history, stories about colourful members who gave the club a perceptible quality which might be thought characteristic of the National Yacht Club – a certain singularity, a disinclination perhaps to be too predictable or over respectful to convention or the accepted way of doing things.

As the Commodore, Martin McCarthy, notes in the Foreword, ‘As temporary custodians of the club, this history reminds us of how the many previous Commodores, Flag Officers and members adapted their policies and operations to meet the ever-changing requirements of Dublin and Ireland’s sailing fraternity….’ Published to mark the sesquicentennial anniversary of the National Yacht Club.

Senior Instructor Wanted for 2021!

The National Yacht Club is currently seeking to recruit a Senior Instructor for 2021. Candidates must have their Senior Instructor Certificate, or be in the process of completing the course.
Closing date for applications is 04/01/2021. Interviews will take place in Mid-January.
