Rory Fitz hangs on to 3rd overall after Day 2 in Moth Fest Bermuda

A windy day 2 (20 knts winds) was not as kind to Rory who still scored very credible results (13th and 8th) in race 3 and 4 of the MS Amlin International Moth Regatta in Bermuda.

The event provides a great test to both Rory (3rd overall) and Annalise (24th) in a fleet of 49 entries…Full list of results here: http://bermudamoths.com/results

An, as always, greatly entertaining video below recaps day 2 where a “Moth Walk” technique was displayed by one of the competitors on the finish line approach…hard to know if it was voluntary or not!! Watch the video here

Leading Irish youth sailors head south to New Zealand in search of medals

Ireland’s leading youth Laser Radial sailors Nicole Hemeryck and Johnny Durcan, both NYC members, yesterday upped anchor to fly south to compete in the the ISAF Youth Worlds Sailing Championship in Auckland, New Zealand from 14 – 20 December 2016. This extremely competitive event features the best of the world’s youth talent and is open to sailors aged 19, this is where the stars of the future are born.

The highly contested honour to represent Ireland was earned following their success at the Laser Radial Youth World Championship in Dublin in July, where they finished seventh in their respective fleets, and when they both won the Laser Radial National Championship at GBSC. Nicole and Johnny, who is also an RCYC member, have considerable experience competing in Wold and European Championships and for both a place on the podium is the aim.

NYC Member Rory Fitzpatrick leads Bermuda Moth Fest after day 1

NYC Member Rory Fitzpatrick holds the early lead at the 2nd annual MS Amlin International Moth Regatta, hosted by the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

Rory finished 1st and 2nd in yesterday’s two races and leads second-placed Rob Greenhalgh of Great Britain by 1 point. Italy’s Stefano Rizzi is third with 9 points after placing 4th and 5th.

Annalise brings home her medal winning Laser

After a whirlwind 24-hour round trip by ferry and road to Britain this week,  Annalise has returned to Ireland with the boat she sailed to a silver medal at this summer’s Olympic Games in Rio.

The idea of taking ownership of the historic Laser Radial dinghy was first mooted in Afloat by WM Nixon back in August (an excellent article to reminisce on her great achievement)

… but maybe she has her own ideas?!? Lets keep an eye for an ad. I drafted one below:

“For Sale – nearly new Laser. One Lady owner only. Very little use on the water (never in more than 25 knts winds) but with extensive road and air travel history. Class compliant but lacks sail numbers. Contact you know who…” 🙂
