Join Ireland’s eSailing National Championship 

Irish Sailing have teamed up with World Sailing and Virtual Regatta, the leading digital sailing platform, to launch the Irish eSailing National Championship.

“Virtual Regatta Inshore” is a free-to-play game available online or as an app, and on Wednesday 8th April we launch the Irish eSailing National Championship.

You can register as an Irish sailor and can now aim for the top of a new Irish Leader Board. You can play against friends, fellow sailors and members of the Irish Sailing Team including Olympians Annalise Murphy, Ryan Seaton and Finn Lynch. All Irish registered players will be automatically put into the Ireland rankings, and entered into the Irish eSailing National Championship. The top 10 ranked Irish sailors on 1 September 2020 will automatically represent Ireland at the eSailing World Championship Finals Playoff.

The opening of Dublin Bay Sailing Club’s summer season scheduled for the last week in April has been postponed due to Government Covid-19 measures. The revised start date is so far unknown.
The first races for a combined fleet of up to 250 boats were scheduled to get underway on Tuesday, April 25.

It was inevitable, however, when waterfront clubs lift-ins were postponed at the weekend that it would impact on DBSC arrangements.

“Even before the latest measures were introduced it was almost inconceivable that our sailing season would start on time. As such DBSC is following the waterfront clubs and postponing the start of the season until the current situation improves, ” DBSC Commodore Jonathan Nicholson said in a statement on the club website.

Significantly, however, Nicholson, also added: “DBSC is still working on the premise that there will be racing this year and are preparing accordingly”.

When Jack retired from the Presidency of Irish Sailing on March 21st, it marked the conclusion of a hugely successful three years in the top post in Irish sailing. They were three remarkable if extremely busy years in which the active and enthusiastic President was always quietly but very effectively supported by his wife Rosemary as they involved themselves in all aspects of the sport in every part of the country.

The commitment of “Team Roy” ranged from Race Officering up to Olympic level at one end, all the way to hospitable cruising with their ubiquitous Hallberg Rassy 48 Tangaroa at the other, with just about everything possible – including continuing as regular Race Officer and Timekeeper for Dublin Bay SC on the big-fixture Thursday evening programme – frequently and competently dealt with in between.

Since his election as President in 2017, Jack and Rosemary Roy have become the very personification of all that is best in Irish sailing, and we are delighted that Afloat made them Sailors of the Month for March 2020.
