Hal Sisk, Steve Morris and Fionan de Barra Awarded International Classic Boat Recognition in London

Hal Sisk of Dun Laoghaire has tonight (Tuesday) received the International Classic Boater of the Year Award in London for his decades of inspired service to classic craft and sailing history, while his colleagues Fionan de Barra of Dun Laoghaire and Steve Morris of Kilrush Boatyard were also personally awarded – at a ceremony in the Royal Thames Yacht Club – for their exceptional work in the trio’s current shared project, the restoration of the Dublin Bay 21 Class.

Hal Sisk’s involvement with classic craft – which includes his current role as Chairman of the International Association of Yachting Historians – came after an active offshore racing career. He was one of the creators fifty years ago of ISORA in 1971-72, while his first significant vintage project was the restoration of the 1884-vintage Fife cutter Vagrant in 1984.

NYC stars Annalise Murphy and Finn Lynch Honoured at Irish Sailing Awards

Annalise Murphy, Olympic silver medallist, was honoured at the Irish Sailing Awards today with the presentation of the President’s Award to mark the end of her stellar Olympic sailing career.

Presenting the prize, Patrick Coveney, Greencore CEO and outgoing chair of the Irish Sailing Olympic Steering Group commented: “Annalise is perhaps the greatest Irish sailor of all time and has changed the way sailing is seen in this country”.

Meanwhile, Olympian Finn Lynch won the prestigious Sailor of the Year for his silver medal at the ILCA 7 Laser World Championships in Barcelona in November 2021. His result was the best achieved by an Irish sailor in any Olympic discipline and came hot on the heels of his 7th place at the ILCA 7 Laser European Championships in October.

James O’Callaghan, Irish Sailing Performance Director commented: “Finn’s progression since his Olympic qualifying disappointment has been phenomenal. He’s responded like a true champion winning a World Championship silver medal. The recognition from the Irish sailing community and his status as Irish Sailing Sailor of the year is truly deserved”.

Junior Dinner & Annual Prizegiving Review and Roll of Honour

The NYC Junior Dinner was held on Friday 11th March at the club for the Summer of 2021, delayed by events.   The turnout was impressive with 80 Junior Sailors in the dining room, with a three course dinner, and 40 parents bunkering safely below in the JB room.

Later in the evening, parents joined the Junior Sailors upstairs, whereupon a huge number of prizes were awarded to great applause, celebration, flashlight and smiles.
There was an impressive array of silverware, with notable club names winking from past etching.  There was also an array of prizes from the new Junior Merchandising – hoodies, jackets, hats, neck warmers – launched specially on the evening.

The prizes were broadened out at this event to celebrate both the pursuit of competition or excellence and also seamanship and improvement – all worthy goals and achievements.
It was a wonderful warm night, timed perfectly timed to focus younger and older minds on the season ahead.
