Ulster Championships report
Eight of our NYC Topper sailors travelled North to the Ulster Championships on the 23rd June.
The location was Carlingford and it lived up to its reputation for unpredictable winds. On Saturday, the fleet of 60 boats launched very promptly and had only a short distance to reach the course. Sailing conditions were tough with gusts of more than 20 knots recorded which caused numerours capsizes. Only two races were sailed that day and the third race was deferred to Sunday because of the deterioration in conditions.
Grainne Young led the NYC contingent going into Sunday with an excellent 5th and 16th on day one. Conor Kneafsey led was also on form with a 12th and an 18th.
Sunday brought lighter sunnier conditions but there was more wind than forecast. Tom Shanahan, Evie Byrne and Conor Byrne all brought their Oppie experience to bear in their first Topper event. Iseult Kneafsey showed her Topper experience by consistently scoreing in the top half of hte fleet. Nicole Hemeryck was more comfortable than the previous day showing great form with three top ten finishes.
The NYC group of eight participants was one of the larger clubs representated in teh 60 boat fleet. Special mention to Niamh Doran and Conor Byrne who both bounced back from injury to compete well.
