38th All Ireland Inter-Schools Sailing
The weather cooperated with the 38th All Ireland Inter-Schools Sailing and two days of quality racing took place in the Sutton Dinghy Club. Over a hundred boats took place in the event, separated into two fleets. The largest fleet was the Mixed Fleet racing Portsmouth Yardstick with Lasers accounting for 40 of the 65 boats, a strong contingent of 420?s, and a number of Mirrors/Toppers/Fevas. Heather Spain finished 2nd Topper and 19th overall in the Mixed Fleet. In the Laser 4.7’s, Nicole Hemeryck, Sarah Cooney, and Patrick Coyle took the top 3 spots (1st, 2nd, 3rd), and finished 20th, 21st, and 24th in the Mixed Fleet. Mark O’Connor sailed on the Blackrock College A’s, Mark is a nephew of Conor Nolan, in who’s memory the competition is named,this was the first time a family member sailed in this event. Conor Byrne (also in the Laser 4.7) contributed to Blackrock College B’s top ten placing in the team competition. In the Optimist Fleet, NYC sailor Loghlen Rickard defended his title from 2012, winning 3 or the 4 and was named the 2013 All Ireland Inter-Schools Optimist Champion. Additionally, NYC sailors Nicola Ferguson and Cliona Coyle (both represent Mount Anville) finished 6th and 9th in the competitive Optimist fleet, and took 4th in the Optimist Team Competition.
