Daniel Raymond Wins First Topper Traveller of 2013
The first Topper Traveller of 2013 took place on 19 May in the home waters of the NYC.
The event had been postponed from March due to storm force winds, so we had the added flavour of a Vintage Triumph Car Rally -which had been planned long before the change of date.
The forecast on this occasion was nearly the opposite of heavy weather and we were afraid we might have been becalmed. We were fortunate that a nice breeze filled in, varying from 4 – 10 knots, accompanied by a lovely sunny day in Dublin Bay for a near record 49 boats. We were delighted to welcome a fleet of 6 sailors from Wexford Boat and Tennis Club, the first time those sailors had participated in any event. We were also pleased to welcome 4 seasoned Optimist sailors from Royal Cork Yacht Club as they are considering launching a Topper fleet there.

Three races were sailed, back-to-back with little or no delay, ably managed by our International Race Officer, Con Murphy. The Traveller was won by Daniel Raymond (NYC) with the First Lady Prize won by Nicole Hemeryck (NYC) who finished 4
th overall. Second place went to Tom Purdon of Strangford Lough YC, and third to Liam Glynn of Ballyholme.
Niamh Doran (NYC/Courtown ) had a great 2
nd place in the last race ending up 6
th overall and capturing the 3
rd Under 17 prize. Issy Delamer (HYC) won the Under 14s while Geoff Power (Waterford Harbour SC) claimed the Under 12 prize. The two 4.2 sailors battled it out for the title with Jenna McCarlie (County Antrim YC) taking the trophy home.
Other NYC sailors included Heather Spain who came 17
th and Hugh Perette who was 19
th, both were competing in their first Topper event. Iseult Kneafsey, Conor Byrne, Mark O’Connor, Tom Shanahan , William Spain and Darragh Rowley were also part of our 11-strong NYC contingent who battled well in the light winds.
It was great to see all those participating in their first event being able to complete the full course on all three races, surely a great indicator of their future potential.
