Dead Heat in Greystones.
There was last minute drama in the Golfer of the Year competition as Anne Lyons overhauled a nine point deficit to draw level on 181 points with Ann Irwin. Discards and count-backs couldn’t separate the two of them and title of Lady Golfer of the Year was awarded jointly. A great finish to the first year of this competition. Cathy Dooley, Mary Wharton and Roni Dunn filled out the minor placings. Roger Bannon held off a great effort from Joe Buckley to take the Men’s title again. Alan Dooley and Peter Ryan were some distance back.
Mary Wharton on 37 points and Brendan Mac Conville on 36 points won the individual prizes on the day, the team prize saw Liam Nicholl, Penny Rooney, Ken Dumpleton and the irrepressible Johnny Rooney take the honours. The visitors prize went to Sam Dooley on a staggering 43 points, another handicap cut is in order for the young man. The National was absolutely hopping on Friday night; this made for a great finish to the 2010 golf season.
We now look forward to 2011, can anyone dislodge Roger Bannon from his perch as the National’s best golfer? Will the Ann(e)s continue their rivalry in the Ladies competition or will Mary Wharton continue her steady improvement? Lots to look forward to, see you all in the Spring.
