Bar Quiz Winners for 2010 – “Corner Boys”
Another cold, March night, the dining room in the National Y.C. coming to life for the 2009/10 quiz night final, 16 loyal teams, Padraic buzzing round ensuring everything was in order, and of course Pat Whelan with his 48 questions.
In the company of some terrific people, a few glasses of wine and a superb supper, a fun, relaxing and enjoyable evening happened for everyone. There has been a fantastic support for the quiz nights this year with 16 teams of up to 6 people attending every alternative Wednesdays throughout the winter, and even on the worst night of the year, weather-wise, 8 teams braved the snow and ice in January to be there.
Joining us for the night, along with Commodore Peter Ryan, were two directors of Frewen & Ayleward, Martin O’Byrne and Richard Farrell, the main sponsors of the quiz night season. They had come on board last September with a very generous offer of a €1200 prize fund, and an offer to ALL club members of a 10% discount in their gentlemen’s clothing store, which added a terrific edge to the competition, and plenty to fight for. .
Throughout the season, at least 4 teams were in the running to win the overall title. In the end The Corner-Boys became the very close winners, followed in 2nd by Enchantress and in 3rd place were On the Rocks, These three teams now go on to represent the NYC in the Inter-Club quiz night on April 14.
The Corner Boys team includes Paddy Madigan, Michael Hennigan, James Mc Sweeney, Oisin Murphy, Stephen Tonge and Niall Fenton.
We do hope that we might see some new faces at the start of the next series starting in September. So, if you and your crew think you could challenge for next year’s title, get a winter commitment from them to keep alternate Wednesday nights free, and come and join the fun. And finally, the good news is that Frewen & Ayleward will continue to sponsor next years quiz nights.
