Long Day in Woodbrook
There was a big turnout for the second NYC golf outing of 2010. This was a test of endurance as much as golf, the weird spring weather combined with an overnight downpour made for heavy going, but the course absorbed it quite well and was very well presented on the day. Alan Dooley’s pact with the Weather Gods continued, as soon as we took to the fairways the clouds parted to give another glorious day with spectacular views of Bray Head and Killiney.
Scoring was difficult on this long course, but you-know-who returned to form to card an impressive 39 points just holding off Alan Pope on 38. The ladies competition was close too, Grainne Mallon, a welcome visitor from Howth Yacht Club, just edged out Cathy Dooley.
The Commodore led his team to victory with the all girls team (Bernice, Roni and Cathy) second. Other notable performances were Peter Cullen’s 4th place on his return from knee surgery and Joe Coughlan marked his debut with closest the pin.
The superb supper afterwards was enlivened by the “National’s Got Talent” show. As the Commodore put it, the lack of ability on the golf course was more than made up for by the performances on stage. Mac Lir won the competition with a rendition of “Linder Sellars and the Sugly Isters” that was “brimply silliant”. A huge thanks to Padraic and the team for a great idea, very well executed.
The craic carried on late into the night, at one stage, there were 3 simultaneous sing-songs going on (all of which were “borderline” at best).
