The marquee event in the National’s Golf season took place in Powerscourt on the last Friday in September. Teams from the RIYC, the DMYC and the George took part. However none of them could match Alan Pope, Joe Hogan and Karl Fagan, led by the redoubtable Roger Bannon who stormed away with the title. This was remarkable as they played early in the day in the windiest and wettest conditions. There is no substitute for raw talent.
Powerscourt had taken a battering from the elements over the week but was in remarkably good condition although the greens remain unfathomable. One golfer was seen putting with his back to the hole, the derision of his playing partners was quickly dispelled when the ball, having travelled in a 210 degree arc, fell into the hole.
One of our guests from the Irish, Mary Rogan took the ladies ‘Royal Marine Hotel Trophy’ (on count-back from Anne McQuaid). It was another good day for Cork as Joe and Bernie Buckley and Pat O’Donnell (Rebels all) finished runners-up tied with the team from the Irish. Joe also took the men’s prize.
Another excellent evening in the NYC followed but an early start for some in the DBSC might have got them home a little earlier than usual.
We are just over half-way through our golf programme for this year, next up is St Anne’s. This outing proved to be a huge hit last year and St Anne’s was voted top course in our end of season poll – so book early!
