Bye Bye Jellyfish, Hello September Series!
Around mid August a large swarm of Lion Mane jelly fish entered Dublin bay and Dun Laoghaire harbour. The stings from these type of jelly fish are significantly stronger than ones we normally see in Dublin bay and in extreme cases can cause anaphylactic shock. Consequently in August the council closed several beaches to swimmers. Since then the number and size of jelly fish in the harbour has reduced significantly to the situation today where there is only a few smaller ones left in the harbour. Unless there is a reversal of this trend we fully expect racing to go ahead next Sunday 7th September.
However parents should be aware that it is unlikely that the harbour will be 100% clear, so all sailors should take precautions to reduce the risk of getting stung. It is recommended that sailors wear full length wetsuits, booties and gloves and not go jumping in the water. Suncream can also act as a barrier to stings.
Look forward to seeing everyone on Sunday.
