NYC Laser Sailors Finn Lynch & Conor Kneafsey Excel at Ulsters
NYC had only 2 representatives at the Laser Ulster Championships held at East Antrim Boat Club in Larne last weekend, May 17-18 (probably due to proximity of the Junior & Leaving Cert exams for many NYC Laser sailors), but they kept the NYC flag flying high as both sailors were on the podium with Finn winning the Standard Fleet and Conor finishing 2
nd in the 4.7 Fleet. There was a variety of conditions to test the sailors with 3 races on Saturday in 15 – 20 knots of variable and gusty winds with a subsequent change of conditions on Sunday to lighter and extremely shifty 5-8 knot winds for the remaining 3 races.
Olympic hopeful Finn Lynch, having moved up to the Standard fleet with the aim of qualifying to represent Ireland in the Olympics, dominated the full rig (standard) fleet, cruising to victory in the 6 race series including 4 race wins, A a 2
nd and a 4th to win by a margin of 5 points. Finn thus added the Ulster title to the Munsters he won in Baltimore at Easter.
Conor Kneafsey, who won the Ulsters last year in Carlingford Lough, defended his 4.7 Ulster title extremely well, never out of the top 5 with 1 bullet, three 2nds, a 3
rd and a 5
th in the 6 races, but just lost out to Johnny Durcan of RCYC by 4 points overall.
Next stop for our laser sailors is the Connachts at Lough Derg YC on June 28-9. We plan to organize some pre-event training at NYC beforehand. We expect a large contingent of NYC sailors will travel to Dromineer for the event!
