The National Yacht Club has ten annual awards for outstanding sailing achievements by members of the Club. Arising from nominations received from members, the awards for the 2011 season are as follows:
The Township Cup – which was given to our predecessors, the Edward Yacht
Club, as a small cruise challenge cup in 1927, is now awarded for the most impressive cruise –
Michael and Anne Madsen for their 3 months cruise to the Azores in their Sadler Starlight 35 Gabelle.
The Muglins Cup – which was presented by past member and Commodore Mr. J.J O’Leary in 1946 and is now awarded for the most interesting family cruise –
Frank and Jemma Cassidy for their participation in the Dun Laoghaire to Dingle race followed by their cruise to Western France in their Pacific Seacraft 40 ‘Ocean Blue’.
The Boyne Regatta Cup – originally presented by the “Kingstown Harbour Boat Club” in 1870 is now awarded for the best performance in cruiser & offshore racing –
Paul and Audrey Adamson who took part with distinction in The Rolex Fastnet Race, having led their class for much of the race, finishing 54th in a fleet of 278 boats from 20 countries. They undertook this ambitious project on “SailingWest Intuition” with a crew that have only taken up sailing recently.
The O’Leary Cup – presented to the NYC in 1984 by Michael O’Leary for the best performance in one designs –
John Masterson on his Shipman ‘Curraglass’ for finishing 1st overall in the Volvo DL Regatta in a fleet of 15 boats and also finishing 2nd in their National Championships.
The Edward Yacht Club Trophy – presented by the officers of H.M. Naval Base, Kingstown in 1919 is now awarded for the best performance in Dinghies, Mermaids or Flying Fifteens –
David Gorman and Chris Doorly for winning the Irish Flying Fifteen National championships.
The John Byrne Memorial Trophy – presented to the NYC by Mrs. Hilda Byrne and her family in 1989 in memory of her husband and past Commodore, John is awarded for the greatest contribution to sailing in the NYC during the year – Past Commodore
Peter Ryan for his hugely successful Chairmanship of ISORA and his involvement in the organisation of La Solitaire du Figaro Stop-over in Dun Laoghaire
Winkelmann Trophy – presented to the NYC by Mrs. Carmel Winkelmann in 2003 and awarded to the Cadet Member who is deemed by his/ her sailing ability to be ‘Cadet of the Year’ –
Philip Doran for his success in the Laser Radial class including representing Ireland at the 2011 ISAF Youth Worlds where he finished 10th overall.
The Greystones 1892 Regatta Cup – presented by Col D’oyly Battley and now awarded to the NYC members who have, as a team, represented the Club with distinction – the
Sovereign Ski Topper Worlds Organising Committee under Chairman Margaret Kneafsey and including IRO Con Murphy, Helen Cooney, Justin O’Callaghan and Anne-Marie Young.
The Commodores Trophy originally presented by Commodore Chris Moore to the winner of the last Dublin Bay 24ft race in the 2004 Regatta, has been awarded to
Annalise Murphy for her success in the Olympic Womens Laser Radial Class including finishing 3rd at Sail for Gold, 6th at the World Championships and qualifying for London 2012.
The Paul Murphy Cup – presented to the NYC in 2009 in memory of Club member and International Judge, Paul Murphy to be awarded to the Club’s Race Management Volunteer who contributed most to the highest standard of race and event management at the Club – awarded to Past Commodore
Ida Kiernan for her on the water support as a Flagship Volunteer at numerous events in the Club and Dublin Bay for many years.
The awards were presented and the fine achievements of these members were celebrated at the
Sailing Awards Dinner in the Club on Saturday 24th March 2012.
